Quorn WI
Quorn
WI meets monthly, and warmly welcomes members and newcomers to the
village with a chance to meet and make friends, try new skills and
listen to speakers on a wide variety of subjects. Over the course
of the year our group will invite several speakers to talk on their
interests, try our hands at a variety of crafts and other activities,
bake those wonderful WI cakes and share our favourite recipes, as
well as going on several outings to areas that interest us!
Meetings
The meetings are held on the second Friday of the month and start
at 1.30pm. Normally they take place in the Church Rooms. By popular
acclaim, we hold to the tradition of singing Jerusalem at the start
of the meeting! There is always a short WI business session, where
we share news, arrange our forthcoming trips, look at events in the
County and pick up issues from the county and national magazines.
Every meeting has a small WI stall where we sell produce - a portion
of the proceeds goes to our WI funds - and after our main program
item, we always have tea or coffee and take the chance to catch up
with each other.
Events
Throughout the year, we take part in a number of events -
either all together or by sending representatives. These range from
purely social (theatre trips, county organised visits) through seasonal
celebrations ( the county carol services) to more serious issues (
the national wildflower surveys, and the National Federation AGM).
And we also organise a summer celebration ourselves - a strawberry
tea or lunch- and contribute a cake stall at the village May Fair.
Our lunch club meets roughly monthly and visits local eating places
chosen by members. Once arranged, we generally post our events on
the village calendar.
Supporting our Community
As part of the wider WI community, we support organisations
such as Rainbows and LOROS with practical help, baking cakes for their
much needed facilities. We also collect 'pennies for friendship' -
part of the nationwide drive that supports the improvement of water
facilities in poorer countries. And you will often find we take part
in other community events.
The wider WI
Our Women's Institute is part of the Leicestershire and Rutland
Federation of WI's. There are more than 150 WI groups that meet in
the two counties, ranging across small villages to the large urban
areas. Nationally, the WI offers a varied programme of events that
involve women across the country in their shared interests. It also
provides facilities such as Denman College, where members take part
in a large number of residential courses -arts, crafts, public speaking,
rural skills to name but a few - and supports the campaigns on behalf
of the membership - for example, the current drive to support community
hospitals and local post office facilities.
Beacon Group
Quorn WI is also part of the Beacon Group - drawing together our nearest
neighbour WI's -and this gives us the chance to meet socially and
share ideas.
